Over the last several weeks, West Virginia residents and lawmakers have learned much about the state’s school clothing voucher program and — judging by what I’ve seen on social media, in the press and at legislative meetings — most seem to have concluded it’s an important program that offers families vital economic support.

It is unfortunate that this public awareness came from such an ugly place — a long delay in the program’s launch, followed by an abrupt application period closure that left thousands of families unable to apply, baseless allegations of fraud and families still without clothing vouchers as at least 10 counties start school this week.
