Missouri’s schedule has officially arrived, preseason preparations are underway and the countdown to Dennis Gates’ fifth season with Missouri has begun.
After reaching the NCAA Tournament three times in four seasons and posting back-to-back double-digit SEC win totals for the first time in program history, the Tigers enter the 2026-27 season with expectations that extend well beyond simply returning to March Madness.
Gates has assembled the most talented roster of his career, blending elite freshmen Jason Crowe Jr. and Toni Bryant with experienced transfers Jamier Jones, Jaylen Carey, Bryson Tiller and Kennard Davis Jr., while returning key contributors Trent Pierce, Annor Boateng and Trent Burns.
The schedule will immediately reveal how quickly those pieces fit together.
Missouri opens with exhibition games against Kansas State and UNLV. The Kansas State matchup in Manhattan should provide a meaningful early measuring stick.
Once the games begin counting, the Tigers receive a favorable opening stretch.
Cleveland State, SIU Edwardsville, Alcorn State, Le Moyne, Evansville and Arkansas-Pine Bluff all be safe wins for the Tigers. Missouri should be significantly more talented, deeper and more athletic than each of those opponents.
The first real test comes Nov. 6 against Saint Louis at the Enterprise Center in St. Louis.
The Billikens are coming off an excellent season and will treat the game like a regional statement opportunity, but Missouri’s size and overall talent advantage should eventually prevail. The Tigers are the more complete roster, though early-season chemistry keeps this in the most-likely win category rather than a lock.
Marquette in the Legends Classic on Nov. 15 presents another important benchmark, a game that should provide an early indicator of Missouri’s national standing. Crowe’s shot creation and Jones’ two-way versatility could be particularly important in a matchup that feels closer to an NCAA Tournament game than a November contest.
Pittsburgh arrives Dec. 1 for the SEC/ACC Challenge and represents the final major tune-up before the schedule flips into the most defining stretch of the season.
That stretch begins with the Border Showdown.
Missouri and Kansas meet Dec. 6 at T-Mobile Center in Kansas City in what may be the most important nonconference game of the season. Beyond the rivalry, the matchup carries national implications for NCAA seeding and perception. Tiller’s transfer from Kansas adds another layer to the storyline. The Tigers’ ability to match Kansas physically in the frontcourt could determine the outcome.
For Gates, this game is also about proving that Missouri can consistently win high-level neutral-site matchups against blue-blood programs.
The next week brings another critical rivalry game against Nebraska, also at the T-Mobile Center.
Nebraska is coming off a historic season, and the rivalry has regained energy as both programs have climbed nationally. Just like the Kansas game, this feels like a true toss-up. Missouri may have the higher-end talent, but Nebraska’s continuity and experience makes it one of the most difficult games on the nonconference schedule.
Indiana in Bloomington on Dec. 18 lands in the competitive category, largely because of the venue. Missouri would likely be favored on a neutral floor or in Columbia, but road games at Assembly Hall are rarely straightforward.
Two days later comes Braggin’ Rights against Illinois in St. Louis.
Illinois returns a significant portion of a team that made a deep postseason run, and this projects as the first game Missouri will be a clear underdog in. The Tigers have enough talent to keep it close, but Illinois’ chemistry, shot making and experience give the Illini the edge in what should be one of the best games on Missouri’s entire schedule.
Missouri closes nonconference play with another safe game against Chicago State before opening SEC play with what should be a highly-competitive game Jan. 2 at Arkansas.
The Tigers should bounce back with a favorable home opener against Texas A&M, then host Kentucky on Jan. 9 in a game that feels increasingly important for SEC positioning. Mark Pope enters a prove-it season, and Missouri’s recent success against Kentucky makes this a winnable opportunity in Columbia.
Tennessee in Knoxville will be a different challenge.
Rick Barnes’ teams have consistently defended Missouri well, and the road environment pushes that game into another game Missouri will likely be the underdog in.
However, the Tigers should be favored in the next two games, hosting South Carolina before traveling to face Oklahoma in Norman.
The trip to Vanderbilt on Jan. 23 is more dangerous than it might appear. Star junior guard Tyler Tanner has elevated the Commodores, and Memorial Gymnasium remains one of the league’s most unusual road environments. Missouri has the talent to win, but expect a true SEC toss-up.
One of the season’s most intriguing games arrives Jan. 26 when Alabama visits Mizzou Arena.
Missouri has shown under Gates that it can beat elite teams in Columbia, and the combination of Crowe, Pierce and Tiller gives the Tigers enough offensive firepower and physicality to challenge the Crimson Tide.
Ole Miss at home should be a bounce-back opportunity, while Mississippi State in Starkville is projected as a difficult but favorable matchup for Missouri.
The Tigers will then host Tennessee before hitting the toughest road trip on the SEC portion of the schedule.
Florida in Gainesville projects as a likely loss for the Tigers. The Gators remain one of the SEC’s elite programs, and the Tigers have gone 2-6 when facing the Gators on the road.
Missouri should recover against Oklahoma at home, but the Feb. 20 trip to Auburn is another toss-up. Auburn remains dangerous under Steven Pearl, and star guard Tahaad Pettiford and Neville Arena come together to make for a difficult out for Mizzou.
Arkansas then visits Columbia on Feb. 23, and despite Missouri’s talent, the Razorbacks get the edge in what has become one of the SEC’s most consistently physical matchups.
Georgia in Athens is a game Missouri should win, but Texas will likely be favored over the Tigers in Austin on March 2, especially if the Longhorns are fighting for postseason positioning.
The regular season closes March 6 against LSU at Mizzou Arena, a game Missouri controls.
If the projections hold, the Tigers finish approximately 23-9 overall and 11-7 in SEC play, placing them comfortably in the NCAA Tournament field and likely in contention for a top-five finish in the conference.
The most important stretch remains Dec. 6 through Dec. 20, when Missouri faces Kansas, Nebraska, Indiana and Illinois in a span of two weeks. If the Tigers emerge from that stretch with multiple wins, the ceiling becomes much higher than just a bid to March Madness.
