(The Center Square) – Invasive carp sampling crews have removed several hundred small silver carp from the Marseilles Pool of the Illinois River, about 80 miles from Lake Michigan.
The 4-to-6-inch fish were discovered on Thursday and Friday, marking the first time invasive carp of that size have been found that far upriver since monitoring began in 2010.
Monitoring crews include fish biologists and others from the state of Illinois, Illinois Natural History Survey, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, U.S. Geological Survey and U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Monitoring results are reported weekly online.
MAN WANTED FOR TEXAS MURDERS ARRESTED IN BELLEVILLE
A man wanted for two separate murders in Texas has been arrested in Belleville.
Members of the U.S. Marshals Service Southern District of Illinois Great Lakes Regional Fugitive Task Force took Eric Wayne Hubert, 23, into custody last Thursday. Hubert was charged in September 2024 with murder following a fatal shooting in Dallas County.
Authorities said Hubert allegedly participated in a fatal shooting in front of a Dallas store June 9, after he allegedly removed his ankle monitor in violation of his bond conditions.
REPORT: CHARGED VIOLENCE PREVENTION WORKER WAS CPS COUNSELOR
A Chicago violence prevention group leader charged with sexual assault and grooming was working for Chicago Public Schools at the time of the alleged incidents.
CWB Chicago reported that the allegations against Charles McKenzie, 37, span nearly a decade, with prosecutors accusing McKenzie of grooming one girl beginning in 2017, when she was 13 or 14 years old, and sexually assaulting another girl in March of this year.Â
McKenzie founded Englewood First Responders and worked as a CPS counseling assistant.
DAMAGE SURVEY OFFERED FOR CHICAGO, COOK COUNTY
Chicago and Cook County emergency management agencies are asking residents impacted by storms and tornadoes that occurred last Tuesday and Wednesday to submit an initial damage assessment.
The city and county offices are working with the Illinois Emergency Management Agency – Office of Homeland Security to compile additional information. The survey closes Aug. 24.
ILLINOIS EPA’S FAIR EXHIBIT FOCUSES ON WATER
The Illinois Environmental Protection Agency says its kid-friendly exhibit on water pollution is open daily in Conservation World at the Illinois State Fair.
The exhibit offers interactive games for young visitors and guidance on water quality for adults. Conservation World features 30 acres of activities, shows, fishing clinics, sensory hours and shade.
The exhibit is open from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. each day of the fair, which runs through Sunday.
