A former public defender who won the support of judges and a member of the Iowa Legislature after a 2023 arrest for shoplifting now stands accused of defrauding Medicaid and cancer patients.

Attorney Cassi Wigington, who will be sentenced next month on a charge of healthcare fraud, has agreed to pay $445,455 as restitution in the case. That agreement comes 13 months after Wigington told the Iowa Supreme Court she had shoplifted alcohol and other items from a grocery store due to her struggles to meet her “family’s basic needs.”
