BOSSIER CITY, La. - If you've noticed higher prices for ground beef at the grocery store, you're not alone. Consumers across the country are paying more at the meat counter due to shrinking cattle supplies and ongoing industry concerns continue to drive up costs.
KTBS Chief Meteorologist Patrick Dennis recently visited Smith Family Farms in Bossier City to learn more about the factors affecting the beef market.
Among the concerns facing producers is the threat of the New World screwworm, a flesh-eating parasite that poses a significant risk to livestock. Ranchers remain vigilant as federal and state agriculture officials work to prevent its spread.
Despite the challenges facing the industry, Smith Family Farms is using the opportunity to help local families in need.
From July Monday through Friday, the farm is partnering with several local restaurants to support the Food Bank of Northwest Louisiana. For every burger purchased at Gullo's, Mae & Co., or Marilynn's Place during the promotion, Smith Family Farms will donate hamburger meat to the food bank.
The initiative aims to help stock the food bank while encouraging the community to support local restaurants and agriculture.
