SHREVEPORT, La. - For Allen Smith, the transition from the battlefields of Baghdad to the streets of Shreveport was meant to be a path toward healing. Instead, it brought a different kind of warfare.

After surviving multiple roadside bombings as an 18-year-old soldier in Iraq, Smith returned home and joined the Shreveport Fire Department. Today, he is a captain and crew chief on Engine 4.
