SHREVEPORT, La. — The Caddo Parish Commission voted to advance a revised school supply ordinance during its latest work session to assist families struggling with high costs ahead of the school year.
The public-private pilot program aims to equip every student at Booker T. Washington High School with a full backpack. Classroom supply lists currently cost up to $200 per child.
Commissioner Victor Thomas amended the ordinance to include $10,000 for Volunteers of America Northwest Louisiana. Chase Bank and Shreveport Community Development also contributed to help cover the cost of supplies for nearly 700 students.
Officials hope the initiative creates a blueprint that can expand to Title I schools across all 12 parish districts next year.
The commission is scheduled to hold a final vote on the changes at its regular meeting on Thursday.
