SHREVEPORT, La. -- Residents seeking help managing their finances can now schedule appointments through the newly relaunched Financial Empowerment Center, which is operating under the auspices of Catholic Charities of North Louisiana at 902 Olive St.
Supported by funding from a national organization, the Cities for Financial Empowerment Fund, the center offers free, professional one-on-one financial counseling designed to help individuals and families navigate inflation, rising costs and other economic challenges.

Community leaders gathered for a ribbon-cutting ceremony to mark the center's reopening, including the city's director of community development. Officials encouraged residents who need assistance with budgeting and financial planning to take advantage of the service.
“We're going to walk with you step by step,” said Carl Piehl, one of the center's trained financial advisors. “In fact, before someone leaves the session, they're already scheduled for a next session. All of the goals have been identified — the things that need work on immediately, short-term, medium-term and long-term goals, and the strategies to get there.”
The Financial Empowerment Center provides counseling through certified advisors who work with clients to establish financial goals and create plans to achieve them.
Catholic Charities of North Louisiana Executive Director Diane Libro said the program is designed to provide practical support in a welcoming environment.
“That's where the FEC steps in,” Libro said. “Our trained counselors are here with no judgment and no shame. They're going to listen to what you need and have reliable information and a willingness to help.”
The center expands on financial services previously offered to clients seeking rent or utility assistance through Catholic Charities. Advisors help participants improve credit scores, develop budgets, monitor cash flow and work toward long-term financial stability.
In addition to budgeting and credit counseling, advisors can also assist clients with legacy planning.
