rice farmers

CROWLEY, La. — With input costs soaring and market prices lagging, rice farming in Louisiana has become an increasingly tough business. Yet in Acadia Parish, growers are pushing through the harvest to bring in a crop that remains central to the state's culture and economy.

Farmer Gerard Frey is currently working through his 48th harvest at GX2 Farms, where the first crop is roughly 60 to 70 percent complete. While recent winds and rain caused some yield loss, overall performance has been strong, with harvest averages reaching the high 40s to low 50s barrel range.
