SHREVEPORT, La. — July 1 marks an exciting milestone in medicine across the United States as newly graduated physicians begin residency training. At LSU Health Shreveport, 180 new residents and fellows are taking the next step of their careers. Altogether, 614 residents and fellows train across 47 accredited programs, reinforcing LSU Health Shreveport’s role as the leading center for graduate medical education in North Louisiana.
Of these physicians:
598 will train in Shreveport at Ochsner LSU Health Shreveport Academic Medical Center and St. Mary Medical Center
18 will train in Alexandria, Louisiana through the LSUHS Family Medicine Residency Program on campus at Rapides Regional Medical Center
24 will train in Monroe, Louisiana through the LSUHS Family Medicine Residency Program on campus at Ochsner LSU Health Monroe Medical Center
Residency and fellowship training at LSU Health Shreveport spans three to seven years, depending on specialty, preparing physicians to deliver high-quality patient care and advance the future of medicine.
“It is a great day that many of you have been working toward for years,” addressed James Morris, MD,FACG, Assistant Dean for Graduate Medical Education to the new cohort. “Today marks the beginning of your journey as physicians entrusted with patient care.”
Many of the residents and fellows have moved to the Shreveport and Bossier area to pursue medical training from around the nation, significantly impacting the local economy. In addition, some positions are filled by graduates of the LSU Health Shreveport School of Medicine. Among those trainees are Drs. Amanda Ragland Greene and Driskel Greene who both begin their residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology as a married couple.
“The LSU Health Shreveport School of Medicine has prepared us for this next step,” said Driskel Greene, MD. “It’s a lot different, coming into a patient’s room saying ‘hi, I’m a medical student,’ to ‘I’m a doctor, here to care for you today.”
“It’s a role we don’t take lightly,” continued Amanda Ragland Greene, MD. “We’re honored to care for patients. I’m very confident, knowing that we’re going to have a great residency experience.” As these new physicians begin their training, LSU Health Shreveport continues its mission to educate the next generation of healthcare leaders while providing exceptional care to communities across Louisiana.
