SHREVEPORT, La. — As the risk of flash flooding is still in the forecast, the American Red Cross is urging families across the ArkLaTex to be prepared and stay informed.

Karen McCoy, executive director of the North Louisiana Chapter of the American Red Cross, says the key to safety starts with awareness, encouraging residents to monitor weather updates and identify evacuation routes ahead of time.

McCoy emphasizes the importance of having an emergency “go kit” ready with essentials like medications, important documents, food, and water. She also reminds the public of a critical safety message: “Turn around, don’t drown,” warning that even a small amount of moving water can pose serious danger.

If it floods, the Red Cross can open shelters and provide assistance to displaced families. Residents are encouraged to download the Red Cross Emergency App for real-time alerts, shelter locations, and safety information.
