SHREVEPORT, La. — A strong turnout filled the Red River District on Friday evening as Shreveport launched its America 250 celebration with the inaugural Red, White and Boom event.
Â
Held beneath the Bakowski Bridge of Lights at the Texas Street Bridge, the event brought together families, community leaders and local organizations for an evening of patriotic entertainment and activities.
Â
The celebration serves as Shreveport's official kickoff to the nationwide America 250 commemoration, which recognizes the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence.
Â
"We wanted the community to come down, unite down here under the bridge," said Shelly Ragle, director of SPAR.
Â
Attendees enjoyed live music, games, food and family-friendly activities throughout the evening while organizers unveiled plans for future America 250 events.
Â
Mayor Tom Arceneaux said the celebration was designed to build excitement ahead of next year's milestone anniversary.
Â
"We really wanted to have a good kickoff party for America 250," Arceneaux said.
Â
Musical performances included the Shreveport Regional Jazz Ensemble and other local entertainers. The evening concluded with a patriotic light show beneath the bridge.
Â
Shreveport police officers were also on hand throughout the event and worked to help ensure a safe environment for attendees.
Â
Red, White and Boom began at 5 p.m. and continued into the night. Organizers said the event is expected to be the first of an entire lineup of celebrations planned in Shreveport.
