SHREVEPORT, La. — Illegal dumping continues to create a financial burden for Shreveport with annual disposal fees for tires cleared from illegal sites totaling about $12,000, according to city officials.
Officials believe many of these tires are being discarded by business owners attempting to avoid legitimate disposal fees. During recent discussions at the property standards meeting, officials noted they are searching for ways to ensure businesses have proper places to take tires rather than passing the cost of disposal onto taxpayers.
To combat the issue, the city is deploying motion-activated cameras at known dumping sites. These cameras send instant alerts to the Shreveport Police Department when activity is detected, allowing officers to respond to illegal dumping in real time.
The Shreveport City Council is also exploring new ordinances to address the root of the problem.
The proposed rules would target commercial tire sellers by requiring:
Strict recordkeeping: Tire shops would have to maintain detailed logs documenting how and where they dispose of used tires.
Disposal verification: Businesses must prove their tires are being handled by licensed, legal disposal services.
By implementing these measures, city leaders hope to hold businesses accountable and eliminate the taxpayer-funded cleanup of commercial waste.
