SHREVEPORT, La. — The City of Shreveport's massive, multi-month celebration to honor the 250th anniversary of the United States continues with a diverse lineup of community events stretching from summer through the end of the year.
The festivities officially kicked off back on May 29, at the Red River District with the Red, White, and Boom America 250 Kickoff. The opening event featured line dancing, live music, food and drink specials, and a patriotic laser show, while the first 500 attendees received free patriotic Bomb-Pop popsicles.
June brings a wave of neighborhood events and historical deep dives, starting on Saturday, with the Columbia Park 100th Anniversary and Flag Giveaway at Columbia Park, alongside the unique Squirrel Scramble event at Querbes Golf Course. Later in the month, a multi-part history series titled The Threads That Bind Us: A Shreveport History Series begins. The series features Juneteenth history with Dr. Michael Hicks on Wednesday, June 17, Women's History with Dr. Cheryl White on Thursday, June 25, and Shreveport's Rich Medical History with Dr. Charles Vincent on Tuesday, June 30.
The historical lecture series wraps up on Wednesday, July 1, with Chief John Mark Davis discussing Adai Caddo Indian Nation History at the Louisiana State Exhibit Museum. Independence Day weekend features a packed schedule, starting with a Naturalization Ceremony at the Strand Theatre on Thursday, July 2, followed by the Cross Lake Fireworks Show on Friday, July 3. The main Independence Day Celebration, the 2026 KTBS 3 Freedom Fest, will take over downtown Shreveport all day on Saturday, July 4, featuring a Bourbon and BBQ Festival, a pie contest, a USA quilt display, a fireworks show, and live music from acts like The Victory Belles, Professor Porkchop and the Dishes, and the Shreveport Symphony Brass Ensemble.
Late summer and early fall will showcase local arts and sports initiatives. An ongoing Artspace Exhibit will run from Friday, Aug. 21, through Sunday, Oct. 25, at Artspace downtown. In September, football fans can catch the Stars and Stripes Border Classic at Independence Stadium on Thursday, Sept. 3, and Friday, Sept. 4, featuring matchups between local high schools like Calvary, Huntington, Parkway, Dunham, Evangel, and West Monroe. The musical heritage of the region takes center stage on Friday, Sept. 18, with Louisiana's Gift to America: A Musical Legacy at the Municipal Auditorium.
The major milestone celebrations conclude in the final months of the year with two of Shreveport's biggest annual traditions. The Red River Revel will take over Festival Plaza across two weekends, running from Thursday to Sunday on Oct. 8 through Oct. 11 and Oct. 15 through Oct. 18. The yearlong schedule wraps up in December with the golden anniversary of the 50th Radiance Technologies Independence Bowl at Independence Stadium.
In addition to the scheduled dates, two citywide programs will remain ongoing through the end of December. The Living Time Capsule project will collect photo booth pictures from various community events to donate to the LSUS Archives, while the Legacy Businesses initiative will continuously recognize local organizations and businesses that have operated in Shreveport for 50 years or longer.
