TEXARKANA, Ark. - The Texarkana Area Veterans' Council #278 hosted the annual Memorial Day Service at Memorial Gardens on Sunday afternoon.
TAVC Commander Jonathan McIntryre read the names of those who passed away this year.
The next elected commander for #278 is Tom Ornberg, determined by the number of votes.
"So, it was a pretty good event and all the other veteran organizations were represented as well. I was part of giving the response for the Flanders' Field, and giving the names of those deceased for this year."
Ben's Heart Ministry was present at this event. The non-profit and is an organization founded by Suzy Kroll, who lost a son to suicide. Her and her group's participation in and around the community's Memorial Day events evidenced her heart for local veterans.
The ministry has grown over the years, and her group of volunteer veterans is ready at the sound of a phone call to listen, pray, and offer anything these vets might need.
Another activity created by Kroll is the 2.2 challenge, where participants sign up to run 2.2 miles each day in the month of May.
22 is the average number of veterans who have taken their own lives because of PTSD and depression. That race finishes tomorrow on Monday, Memorial Day.
