TEXARKANA, Ark. — A Texarkana couple is currently in the Top 5 of a national contest, hoping to secure a $20,000 cash prize and a unique celebrity experience while raising awareness for a rare medical condition.
Jana and Nigel Tubbs captured the attention of voters nationwide in the "America's Favorite Couple" competition. Jana Tubbs initially submitted the application on a whim to help distract her husband from the daily pain associated with Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, an incurable connective tissue disorder.
"We had to fill out an application, and I did it just being silly," Jana Tubbs said.
"Yeah, she told me she did that, and I said, yeah, I don't know if we're going to get called about that," Nigel Tubbs added.
"And I never dreamed we would be picked," Jana Tubbs continued. "And so then I get an email, like I guess in May, telling me that we were picked to participate and that was kind of where we started, but I thought it was funny and interesting."
The grand prize for the competition includes $20,000, an exclusive feature in Variety magazine, and a triple date with celebrity couples Jeff and Emilie Goldblum and Charlie Day and Mary Elizabeth Ellis.
Beyond the recognition, the couple intends to use the prize money to fund travel and lodging for specialized medical evaluations in cities equipped to treat Ehlers-Danlos syndrome. The pair is traveling to Houston for further medical assessments as the competition enters a crucial phase.
Voting for the current round concludes at 9 p.m. Thursday. Supporters can cast a free daily vote for the couple by visiting their online profile here.
