SHREVEPORT, La. -- Millions of people are expected to hit the road this holiday weekend, filling highways as they travel to celebrate with family and friends.
As traffic increases, the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development is encouraging motorists to prepare before leaving home by using the agency's digital travel resources to check for road conditions, closures and delays.
DOTD recommends using the 511 Louisiana Trip Planner at 511la.org or downloading the Drive Mode app to view road and lane closures and plan the safest and most efficient route.
"That's going to show you all of the various road or lane closures so you can help map out your route if you're staying within the state of Louisiana," said Erin Buchanan, DOTD spokeswoman. "We're going to post anything through our notification system. Anybody can sign up for that on our website. All of that will also be posted on our website as well as our social media. The information is there. We just want people to utilize the resources that are available."
Drivers traveling in Texas can also access similar tools through the Texas Department of Transportation. The DriveTexas website provides real-time traffic camera views, road conditions and updates on hazards that could affect travel.
