Firefighters and responding crews are still working to get a handle on the Sand Creek Fire, and now they'll have federal money behind them after the Federal Emergency Management Agency approved a grant last Friday to help cover the costs.

During Monday's morning briefing, Northern Rockies Complex operations section chief Philip Knaub said the Sand Creek Fire has grown to 31,652 acres and remains at 1% containment. While crews on the western and northern edges of the fire are cutting line and prepping burnouts, Knaub said that crews in the vicinity of Maverick Mountain are fighting a “dirty burn.”
