Three years ago, the Montana Department of Environmental Quality and the state’s Natural Resource Damage Program advised groups and individuals bird-dogging the challenging cleanup of the Clark Fork River that they believed the settlement dollars funding that work would get it to Garrison.

One strategy designed to make the money last longer was to narrow the zone of work along the river’s floodplain, thereby leaving contaminants in place that could eventually be captured by a migrating river.

Clark Fork River

The Clark Fork River meanders through the Deer Lodge Valley. Remediation and restoration work continue for a river hammered more than a century ago by mining and smelting pollution from upstream.

Brush matrix

A somewhat new remedial approach along the upper Clark Fork River uses "brush matrix" materials from trees removed during conifer encroachment interventions in the nearby uplands or from downed cottonwood trees to hold the riverbank, provide a haven for willow cuttings planted during remediation and offer temporary habitat for trout. Early cleanup phases tended to eliminate key fisheries habitat like undercut banks in a wholesale effort to excavate contamination.

Clark Fork Tour

Logan Dudding, Clark Fork River project manager for the Montana Department of Environmental Quality, talks to about 40 people in August 2025 who were touring Phase 7 cleanup work of the river near Racetrack Pond.
