A celebratory crowd filled the broad sidewalk Friday evening in front of The Montana Hotel, now called The Historic Montana. The brick structure remains a handsome historic building in downtown Anaconda despite the decapitation by incautious previous owners of its top two floors in the late 1970s.

Copper King Marcus Daly, the founder of Anaconda, built the once-grand hotel, which opened in July 1889. Some 137 years later, the Anaconda Restoration Association, in the midst of restoring glory to the structure, honored Daly with a bronze statue at the corner of Main and Park streets.

Sculptor Fred Boyer used Jim Dolan's hand and his own hand to craft a likeness of Marcus Daly's where it rests on the installation's park bench.

The Marcus Daly statue installation includes a tribute to Tammany, Daly's beloved thoroughbred, an animal once honored with its likeness in The Montana Hotel's bar.
