The Montana Department of Natural Resources and Conservation responded Saturday afternoon to what became known as the Perkins Fire east of Warm Springs and about a dozen miles east of Anaconda.
The fire was reported around 3 p.m. DNRC engine crews responded, as did helicopters that scooped water from the nearby Warm Springs Ponds. Two hand crews later joined the firefighting effort.
DNRC initially estimated the fire at 10 acres, burning in grass and timber. On Sunday, the fire was estimated at 16 acres.Â

Firefighters had halted the fire's forward movement Sunday and were in mop-up mode, said Jack Kuney of DNRC. He said evacuation notices for nearby residents had been lifted.Â
A firefighter at the scene Saturday said one report suggested the fire started when a trailer burned in that vicinity, but Kuney said Sunday the fire's cause is still under investigation.Â

Police from Anaconda-Deer Lodge County had issued an evacuation notice for residents in the vicinity of the fire.Â
Montana Department of Environmental Quality referenced the fire Sunday in its smoke forecast report.
"The Perkins Fire [east] of Anaconda, the Elder 1 Fire just south of Frenchtown, and the North Fork Lost Horse Fire southwest of Hamilton grew rapidly on Saturday. Communities downwind of these fires will continue to see the greatest impacts to air quality," DEQ reported.
