The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency dangled the multimillion-dollar prospect like a bright-red apple before the community of Butte-Silver Bow County.

As promised, Butte, a city scarred by more than a century of historic mining and smelting, would receive a grant to build a recreation, resiliency and wellness hub.

BSB community hub canceled

This is an early artist's rendering of a community recreation and resilience center that was planned near the Butte Civic Center as part of a $20 million grant from the EPA. The agency canceled the grant in May 2025 and denied the county's appeal of the cancellation.
