Donald Trump has never been known for his command of history, but even by his standards, signing this Iran memorandum at Versailles is breathtaking.
Versailles is not just a beautiful palace. It is one of the most loaded symbols in modern world history. It is where the treaty ending World War I imposed humiliation, punishment, and reparations on Germany. It is shorthand for leaders mistaking ceremony for settlement, and spectacle for wisdom. Any serious adviser should have understood the meaning of that room.
And that is exactly the point.
The people who arranged this moment knew what they were doing. European leaders and diplomats know American and world history far better than the average American, and certainly better than a president who has shown again and again that he sees history mostly as scenery. They served him a humiliation on a silver platter, polished it until it gleamed, and let him believe the shine was tribute.
According to the source material, the memorandum refers to the conflict with Iran as the “current war,” even after the administration had insisted it was not really a war at all. It reportedly lifts sanctions, restores Iran’s access to financial markets, unfreezes assets, and contemplates at least $300 billion for Iran’s reconstruction and development. In return, Iran appears largely to repeat earlier nuclear promises, but without the serious verification system that made the 2015 agreement meaningful.
That is not triumph. That is retreat wrapped in gold leaf.
