Helena staff recommended a joint fire-police staffing levy for November’s general election ballot, but how many police and firefighters the city guns for is a question of taxpayer sympathy and timing — especially when even the cheapest tier is expected to cost $4.5 million.

At a Wednesday administrative meeting, Helena fire and police staff presented a list of asks for the coming mill levy, offering three tiers of staffing options should the Helena City Commission approve one for the November election.
