Helena will pay more than 30 union firefighters $900,000 in total backpay to settle a conflict between the union and city after an arbitrator determined the city’s new wage system provided inadequate compensation.

The conflict stems back to March 2024, when it came time for the Helena Fire Department’s labor union, Local 448 of the International Association of Fire Fighters, to negotiate its three-year contract that was set to begin that July.
