Adam Jahiel was living in Los Angeles when he learned of the French-American Expedition to the Titanic in the spring of 1987, two years after her discovery by oceanographer Robert Ballard.

Ballard had worked with the French Research Institute to Explore the Sea. That organization, which operated the Nautile, was also part of the 1987 expedition that was financed by a consortium of interests. Its successor, RMS Titanic Inc., a subsidiary of Premier Exhibitions, has exclusive salvage rights to the ship. The company has brought up more than 5,500 artifacts that are on display in several Titanic exhibits around the country.
