Adam Jahiel hadn’t signed on with a 1987 expedition to the Titanic with an expectation that he would find himself two-and-a-half miles below the cold surface of the North Atlantic.

Jahiel, who lives in Story, Wyo., was there to make a photographic record at the surface — crews lowering the French submersible Nautile from her mother ship, the Nadir; divers escorting her home from the bottom; and each of the 1,800 artifacts brought up from the first of many salvage operation at the wreck site.
