Montana lawmakers working on bill targeting shortage of rural veterinarians

MARTINSDALE, Mont. — Lawmakers are reworking a proposal aimed at bringing more veterinarians to rural Montana communities where ranchers say help can be far away.

In 2025, the U.S. Department of Agriculture designated 17 Montana counties as facing a critical shortage of veterinarians. The National Conference of State Legislatures reports that the U.S. has lost 90% of its rural veterinarians since World War II.

“Ranching is the largest industry in the state, and without that, you would see it come down quickly. I mean, we rely on our vets immensely for all of their wealth of knowledge and help that they can give,” said Sen. Wylie Galt of Montana Senate District 39.
