Prickly Pear Land Trust announced 198 acres at War Eagle Hill have been “permanently protected” through an agreement with the Montana National Guard and Double L Family Land.
The parcel is located six miles west of Helena behind Fort Harrison, which is a training facility and also hosts a United States Veteran Affairs Medical Center. War Eagle Hill contains grasslands, old-growth forest and riparian habitat, a press release said. Additionally, it will help with winter ranging and movement of large animals, including elk, moose and bears.
The area is, in part, intended for hunter usage, and it’s close to Helena-Lewis and Clark National Forest, as well as Bureau of Land Management holdings and state land, as well.
“We treasure many memories made with family and friends on this land from time spent exploring its topographical and ecological diversity. These experiences were a gift that only time spent outdoors can cultivate,” Laurie Cox, a representative of Double L Family Land, said in a press release. “We are thrilled that this land will be available for people to enjoy. Collaborating with PPLT was a perfect way to do right by the land, ensuring that it is protected from development and included in a master plan of open spaces for the benefit of our ecosystems.”
Additionally, the move conserves open space around the military base, which the release said supports “local ecosystem health and military readiness.” Funding from the Department of Defense’s Readiness and Environmental Protection Integration Program was used in the project.
“For 31 years, PPLT’s strength has come from dedicated private landowners and visionary community partners who recognize that Montana’s open spaces are worth protecting forever,” Mary Hollow, executive director of Prickly Pear Land Trust, said in a press release. “By partnering with Double L Family Land and the National Guard, we are securing a wildlife gateway to the Continental Divide, supporting military readiness at Fort Harrison, and keeping public hunting access intact for central Montanans.”
