Senator Tim Sheehy of Montana alongside Alex Padilla from California are introducing a bill that would provide hazard pay to wildland firefighters and smokejumpers for prescribed burns and training jumps.
WASHINGTON D.C. — Sen. Tim Sheehy of Montana and Sen. Alex Padilla of California introduced a bill that would expand hazard pay for wildland firefighters and smokejumpers.
The proposal would apply to prescribed burns and training jumps, not just active wildfire response.
It is called the Wildland Firefighter Hazard Pay Correction Act.
Under the bill, firefighters already received hazard pay when responding to active wildfires. The proposal said crews involved in prescribed fire work and smokejump training faced risks comparable to wildfire suppression and should be compensated the same way.
The measure was a companion bill to a House proposal introduced by Congresswoman Celeste Maloy of Utah.Â
