HELENA, Mont. – Ahead of anticipated fire potential across the Treasure State, fire management professionals reported how to better prepare for hot months ahead.
In June, the National Weather Service predicted that moisture will be less than average for the western half of Montana and the Northern Rockies.
Average precipitation normally ranged from 1.5 to 4 inches, depending on the location and elevation. The southwestern part of the state will be affected more than the rest of Montana in an expected drought season.
With the warmth of June, the potential risk for wildfires is reported to be higher in eastern Montana, and that risk extends into July.
July through September are not far around the corner, the Northern Rockies Predictive services reported that below than normal precipitation is likely in western Montana.
Higher temperatures are expected, however, the chances of rain are more likely than they were in the 2025 predictions.
The risk of fire is still possible across the state, and Montanans are encouraged to be prepared, with the risk expected to be higher in western Montana by August.
Already in 2026, 615 fires and 23,906 acres have been reported for Montana. The Montana Department of Natural Resources and Conservation (DNRC) has a fire dashboard where you can check out the latest on wildfires across Montana here.
With a shorter winter than usual, Montana was faced with less snow pack in the mountains, significant wind and dry weather before the summer heat potential ahead.
According to the U.S. Forest Services, weather patterns in 2025 led to droughts that affected the health of Montana forests. Information and the impact for 2026 can be found on the U.S. Forest Services website.
“The State of Montana and DNRC are prepared for the 2026 fire season,” DNRC spokesperson DNRC Director Amanda Kaster said.
According to Kaster, wildfire risk across Montana has been reduced through the Fire Protection Program and through the DNRC’s involvement in forest management.
DNRC reported that in 2025, 94% of fires were kept to 10 acres or fewer.
For everyone to enjoy what Montana has to offer, fire prevention includes:
- Staying current on weather conditions and fire restrictions in your area.
- Always using an established ring fire and never leaving campfires unattended.
- Ensuring trailer chains are properly secured and not dragging on the pavement.
- Properly maintaining and cleaning farm and lawn equipment.
- Avoiding driving or parking your vehicle, including all-terrain and utility vehicles, on dry grass.
- Using caution when burning debris and never burning piles when it’s hot, windy, or when fire restrictions are in place.
