(The Center Square) – Municipal elections in 91 of 100 North Carolina counties in 2025 collectively cost $8.4 million for the 822,000 ballots cast, a new analysis says.

The roughly 10 bucks a ballot had extremes of $1,517.80 for each of the five ballots cast in tiny Camden County and $5.83 for the nearly 221,000 counted in heavily populated Mecklenburg County. The performance audit from the office of first-term Republican state Auditor Dave Boliek broke down the average cost per vote to $126 for small counties, $23 for medium-size counties, and $14 for large counties.
