(The Center Square) – Of 118,389 voter registration additions since North Carolina’s primary, net gain is 91.7% independence rather than either of two major political parties or two other recognized parties.
The weekly seven-day update by the State Board of Elections on Saturday lifted the total to 7,826,649.
Rounded, 40% are unaffiliated (3,129,789), 29.7% are Republicans (2,327,784) and 29.6% are Democrats (2,317,805). Libertarians total 46,487 and the Green Party is at 4,784.
Voter roll maintenance, standard and as required by law, and a trend away from parties since Election Day 2024 has continued to swell the independents and weaken the major parties regarding registrations.
For the 2026 midterms on Nov. 3, absentee ballots go into the mail Sept. 4 – or two weeks from this coming Friday. North Carolinians will choose a U.S. senator, all 14 members of the U.S. House, and all 170 members of the General Assembly in the second-longest of ballots in the four-year rotation.
