DICKSON, Okla. (KTEN) - "We have the best quarterback in the county. We have some of the best skill players in the county and we have some of the biggest linemen. We have a lot of special talent on this team and it's not just on offense, we've got a lot of talented players on both sides. We have pieces in every position that can go do great things, so we feel like we have the guys that can go against anybody in our district. We have some of the best players, I feel like, in our district, and again it is up to us to go and make something happen with it because our expectations are high and we need to go prove it."
The Comets finished last season 4-6, but were a highly competitive team averaging over 25 points per game. Dickson believes if they can fix some of the little things, they can be a special team.
"Last year we lost three games by one-score or less. We really push these kids a lot, we've got to get one score better in a lot of these games and it's little things with the execution. We've got a lot of talent, but execution is the difference between winning and losing a lot of times, so we feel like this year we are really pushing them to take a step forward in that direction. Our expectations are a lot higher, but based on results from year's past we probably aren't going to be predicted to finish real high but we believe in this group and we feel like this is one of the best teams Dickson has been able to put together in a long time and now it's up to us as coaches and players to go make that happen."
Dickson brings back some talented players that filled up the stat sheet last season. One notable name is their superstar quarterback Baylor Bond who finished last season with 21 passing touchdowns and over 2,000 yards through the air. If the Comets are going to make a run, it starts with him.
"He's a generational talent. He broke pretty much every passing record we have in the whole program, including career records in his first season. It's not just him though, he's got a lot of playmakers around him that do a lot of great things with the ball. The thing that is great for me is that I have a guy that can go and find those guys and the great thing for him is that he can get it to those guys and those guys can take a short pass into a long gain pretty easily."
"I just put the ball in their hands and they make me look good and I appreciate them for that. It's fun having the guys that I have."
And the Comets know what it would mean if they can punch their ticket to the playoffs for the first time in six seasons.
"A lot, for the town, the community, the school, us, we haven't done that in a while so it'd be good."
