HEALDTON, Okla. (KTEN) - “The big difference is the expectations this year. Last year I think we came in hoping to win, but this year we expect to win and we know that we can win.”
Healdton won more games last season than they did the previous four seasons combined. They hosted a playoff game and won it, but now the goals are a little loftier.
“Well, I think obviously go win a district championship and give ourselves the best chance in the playoffs with the best matchups and have two home games instead of one like we did last year. Then obviously the big goal is to win a gold ball at the end of the season.”
“Make it passed semi-finals, hopefully get the gold, the championship, and get a gold ball.”
That’s a feat the Bulldogs have never accomplished. But the team knows what it would mean to make history in Healdton.
“It would mean a lot since my first two years of high school we were bad and then it flipped around so hopefully I can top off my senior year with that.”
“I think we’ve been the underdogs for quite a while now and I think it’s our chance and our time to shine.”
If Healdton is going to repeat last year’s success or even win a gold ball, they’re going to do it with a new look team after graduating a lot of talent. But the Dogs have been infected with a youth movement
“Well, those young guys have bought in and they are learning from those older guys who were here last year and experienced that success. A lot of them were managers and water boys and things like that that were on the sideline. They were getting to see it close up. So we’re starting to build a great program that is going to go through all of those guys.”
Healdton starts their season on September 4th against Comanche.
