HUGO, Okla. (KTEN) - The Hugo Buffaloes were one of the unluckiest teams when it comes to district and class realignment. The 3-A state champions from last year Lincoln Christian and powerhouse Checotah both move into Hugo’s district and there’s no questioning how important it is to take care of business.
“We’ve got to beat the teams that are on the lower end of the district and make sure we take care of those guys. Lincoln Christian and Checotah are the last two games of the year which is good for us because we should know whether we are in the playoffs or not. We could possibly be in the playoffs before we even play those guys which is a big plus for us.”
It’s a tough draw for the Buffaloes who finished last season 4-7 losing in the first round of the playoffs. But, the team is excited to face such great competition in their district because being battle tested can help a lot once you hit the post season.
“I’ve always wanted to face somebody that’s been there and knows the experience so if something happens, like we beat them, we already know how it’s going to go down when we get there.”
It’s year two under head ball coach Scott Schier, which means the culture is starting to be established and the schemes are beginning to get memorized a little bit easier. All of which Coach Schier says makes him believe his team will be better than last year’s.
“It’s huge to have the extra year. We were right off the cuff last year, we got just a couple of spring practices and that was about all we got so having another year in the system where the kids have grasped it pretty well and we’re getting to expand on it now is exciting.”
The Buffaloes will look to make the playoffs for a third straight season and they have plenty of reasons to believe they can make it back and make a run.
“Just our senior leadership. We have got a lot of kids that have a lot of experience. Jacob’s going to do a good job slinging the ball around. We’ve got a lot of guys that can go and make plays out in space. It’s going to be an interesting year, our offensive line is starting to come around to block pretty well. I’m just excited to see what this team can do and where we can grow to from last year.”
The Buffaloes open up their season on August 28th against Hartshorne.
