U.S. Sen. Mitch McConnell says he has been discharged from a rehabilitation program after a seven-week absence from the Senate.
McConnell, 84, was hospitalized in June and said on July 12 he would enter a rehabilitation center.
“Earlier today, I was discharged from the rehabilitation center to continue my recovery at home. Elaine and I are grateful for the many well wishes and support from friends, colleagues, and Kentuckians, and for the attentive care I’ve received from excellent doctors, nurses, therapists, and hospital staff,” McConnell said in a Thursday afternoon statement.
“On the advice of my doctors, I’ll maintain an intensive regimen of physical therapy from home during the state work period, and I’ll continue to engage with my staff and colleagues on important Senate business,” he continued.
On Thursday, McConnell was not present at an Agriculture Committee committee to advance the farm bill to the Senate floor. He had attempted to cast a vote by proxy but Senate rules prevented it.
Throughout his public absence, speculation about McConnell’s vitality ran rampant online and his office shared photos of him with his wife, former Secretary of Labor and Secretary of Transportation Elaine Chao.
Among those calling for greater transparency about McConnell’s health was Democratic Gov. Andy Beshear. He sent a letter to McConnell last week asking for “provide proof of your capacity to serve, or resign.”
Beshear faced many calls nationally to declare McConnell’s seat vacant. However, legal experts have previously told the Lantern Beshear has no authority to take any action on McConnell’s seat until the senator has resigned or died.
