A cool escape from the heat just north of Blanchard

The free trail system opened a little more than a year ago and is still something of a hidden gem in the Ark-La-Tex.

Ben Tais has been visiting several times a week since the trails opened, taking advantage of challenging mountain bike trails that can be difficult to find elsewhere in the region.

"It's still hot, but it's not as bad as riding out under the sun," Tais said.

Whether you're an experienced trail user or just heading out for a short hike, coming prepared is important.

Make sure to apply sunscreen before heading out. While the forest provides plenty of shade in some areas, the trails aren't completely covered.

The Red River Waterway Commission, which created the park, has mapped the trail loops and provides guidance to help visitors choose trails based on their skill level.

For Tais, the variety of trails is part of the appeal.

"There's a trail for runners, for hikers, for bikers. So there's plenty of room out here. It's very nice, very well maintained. They did a great job in building it," Tais said.

One of the biggest rewards comes when you make the transition from the bright summer sun into the forest canopy.

Once beneath the trees, the temperature can feel noticeably cooler, although the heat is still present. Trail signs help keep visitors on course as they explore.

Basic heat-safety precautions are still important. When you need to take a water break, find a shady spot rather than stopping in direct sunlight. Taking time to rehydrate, rest and cool down can help you stay energized on the trail.

The trails have already proven their value to those who have discovered them. Weekends can bring larger crowds, but on many weekdays, visitors may find themselves with plenty of space to explore.
