BOSSIER CITY, La. - House Speaker Mike Johnson stayed largely neutral Thursday on Louisiana’s proposed congressional redistricting map, saying only that he hopes voters across the state feel fairly represented.
Johnson spoke with reporters during a visit to Bossier City, where he presented Spirit of Louisiana Awards honoring community leaders from across the region.
“What we hope for, what we hope that this new map represents and reflects is an accurate depiction of the communities and that everybody is fairly represented,” Johnson said. “So, again, you know, it’s up to the state legislature, not Congress, to do that. I have my fingers crossed just like everyone else.”
The ceremony was held at the Bossier Parish School for Technology and Innovative Learning and recognized about a dozen leaders from Caddo and Bossier parishes for their service to the community.
Among those honored was pastoral counselor Jerome Cox, who said the recognition meant a great deal to local leaders.
“We are just excited to be a part of it,” Cox said. “We have a lot of respect for Mr. Johnson and his team. It’s just a beautiful time.”
The Mangum Brothers, known locally for their Twin Blends photography and video productions, also received challenge coins and certificates from the speaker.
Johnson’s visit came as Louisiana lawmakers continue debating congressional district boundaries ahead of upcoming elections. The speaker declined to weigh in directly on the proposed map, emphasizing that the issue remains in the hands of state legislators.
Johnson also addressed tensions involving Iran and ongoing discussions in Washington over presidential war powers. He said he is not prepared to support efforts to limit the commander in chief’s authority through a war powers resolution.
The U.S. House is scheduled to reconvene next week.
