Minor coastal flooding appeared to be the lone impact from Tropical Storm Bertha at it hugged the Louisiana coastline Thursday morning en route to a second landfall in Southeast Texas.
Since its landfall Wednesday afternoon in St. Bernard Parish, Bertha’s sustained winds have stayed at 45 mph. As of 7 a.m. Thursday, the National Weather Service placed the storm about 70 miles southeast of Lake Charles and moving west at 13 mph, nearly double its forward speed a day earlier.
A tropical storm warning is in effect along the Gulf Coast from the Terrebonne/Lafourche Parish line, to Sargent, Texas. Tidal surges from the mouth of the Mississippi River to Port Bolivar, Texas, are expected to reach 1 to 3 feet.
The bulk of Bertha’s rainfall continues to be concentrated to its south over the Gulf of Mexico, though forecasters say the potential remains for localized flooding onshore if the storm’s squall bands train over a particular area.
Bertha is expected to reach the Texas coast later Thursday and move inland Friday, maintaining tropical force strength at least until landfall.
