(The Center Square) — Maine U.S. Sen. Susan Collins joined a handful of Republican lawmakers who voted to approve a war powers resolution Tuesday aimed at blocking President Donald Trump's military actions in Iran.Â
Collins, who is facing a tough reelection battle in November's midterms, joined nearly all Democrats in a 50-48 Senate vote to pass a war powers resolution regarding the Iran conflict.Â
The legislation directs the Trump administration to halt further unauthorized military actions and bar U.S. troops from hostilities, unless Congress explicitly authorizes the action. The House had previously passed the measure in a 215-208 largely partisan line vote.Â
Collins was one of four Republicans — including Sens. Bill Cassidy of Louisiana, Lisa Murkowski of Alaska and Rand Paul of Kentucky — to break with the president on the Iran War resolution, which doesn't carry the force of law. Trump took to social media Tuesday night to criticize the lawmakers for bucking his administration.
"Four Republican Losers voted with the Dumocrats, and Iran asked my people, ‘what does that all mean?’ he wrote on Truth Social. "These Senators have just made my job more difficult, but I will get it done, one way or the other, because I always get it done!"
There was no immediate comment from Collins, but she has previously said that further military action needs achievable goals and a defined strategy for ending the conflict. She says the Trump administration needs to outline clear goals for ending the hostilities.
To be sure, Collins has supported previous war powers resolutions in the Senate and was among a small group of Republicans who voted last week to discharge a similar resolution from the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. The measure failed to advance for a vote in the full Senate.Â
The resolution's passage comes as the Pentagon is gearing up to ask Congress to approve another $80 billion to cover military costs as Trump seeks an agreement to end the war.Â
