MISSOULA, Mont. — Missoula's Bitterroot River is getting some added protection.
The city announced an award of over $1 million, with full principal forgiveness, that will help design and install treatment systems that filter out pesticide-related compounds in the Pattee Creek watershed and other emerging contaminants before stormwater flows into the river.
"This investment allows us to take the next step in protecting one of Missoula's greatest natural resources," Tracy Campbell, superintendent of stormwater for the City of Missoula Public Works & Mobility Department, said. "We're grateful for DEQ's partnership and support. This funding gives our team the opportunity to implement innovative treatment technologies, expand our understanding of emerging contaminants and continue protecting the health of our rivers for future generations."
According to the city, emerging contaminants are chemicals increasingly found in water resources that may raise environmental concerns.
Over the coming months, the Stormwater Team will work with Montana DEQ to finalize the project scope. The city said possible upgrades could include advanced filtration using granular activated carbon and other treatment media, pretreatment structures and monitoring equipment to measure how well the system works.
