A visitor to Glacier National Park was transported to the hospital after being struck by a falling rock on Going-to-the-Sun Road Saturday afternoon.
The vehicle was reportedly traveling along the Rimrocks section of the road when the rock fell through the vehicle's roof, striking the visitor, according to Glacier Public Affairs Specialist Autumn Sifuentes.
Park rangers and the Advanced Life-Support and Emergency Rescue Team responded to the incident at approximately 1:40 p.m. The road was subsequently closed for two hours during the incident response. Â
The visitor was transported to the Logan Health Hospital in Kalispell. Neither the status of the visitor’s potential injuries nor the visitor's name have been publicly identified as of Tuesday morning and no further information was available.
Reports of the incident were posted on social media, including a video showing the ALERT rescue helicopter landing on Going-to-the-Sun Road. The video then cuts to the helicopter's departure and does not show anyone exiting or boarding the aircraft.Â
Rockfall from cliffs above the road is not uncommon, according to reporting from the Daily Inter Lake. Several protections are in place to prevent incidents, including rock anchors and bolts and invisible containment systems. Additionally traffic is typically limited to prevent accidents.
