GREAT FALLS, Mont. — Acting U.S. Attorney Mark Steger Smith announced that a Poplar man was sentenced in two separate federal cases involving a minor and a machete attack.
Eithan Toby McKay, 22, pleaded guilty in January 2026 to sexual abuse of a minor and, in a separate indictment, to assault with a dangerous weapon, according to federal prosecutors.Â
For the first case, McKay received 18 months in prison followed by five years of supervised release. For the second, he was sentenced to over two years in prison followed by three years of supervised release.
Court documents said the sexual abuse case began after law enforcement got information in September 2024 that a young teenage girl was pregnant. Investigators said the girl identified McKay as the father and said they met on social media and spent time together at her house in Poplar.
Prosecutors said the girl told investigators the relationship became sexual when she was 13 and McKay was 19 and that she became pregnant.Â
In the separate assault case, prosecutors said McKay went to a home in Brockton with a machete and attacked his brother. A 911 call placed shortly after 2:00 a.m. on March 4, 2025, reported that the victim had been hit and was bleeding.
According to court records, the victim suffered serious injuries to his head, arm and shoulder. He told responders that McKay slashed him after being told to leave the home.
