WEST YELLOWSTONE, Mont. — A man is in critical condition after people nearby and emergency crews pulled him from the water at Rainbow Point and brought him back to life.
According to a Facebook post from the Gallatin County Sheriff's Office, Hebgen Basin Rural EMS, Montana FWO and sheriff’s deputies responded at about 5:25 p.m. to a report of a swimmer in trouble. The adult man was about 100 yards from shore when he became incapacitated and went underwater.
Several bystanders who did not know each other rushed in and swam to the area where he was last seen. A nearby boating group and other swimmers joined the search, found him underwater and got him back to shore.
People on shore started CPR and other lifesaving measures before EMS arrived. Crews revived the man, then an Air Methods helicopter flew him to Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center for further evaluation. He remained in critical condition.
Sheriff Dane Springer thanked the people who stepped in to help.
“This incident is a profound testament to the power of our community coming together in a crisis. We extend our deepest gratitude to everyone who risked their own safety to save a fellow citizen today,” he said.
