(The Center Square) – Taxpayers’ costs for the troubled Charlotte Area Transit System – a 55% reduction in armed security staff and 211% increase in contract value were revealed last year – include $5 million to $6.5 million for fare evasion by riders, and $1.7 million in unspent funding for safety and security equipment.

Against potential loss, only $550 was collected in fare evasion fines, says an analysis from the office of the state auditor. That’s on top of the City Council last fall agreeing to pay a Washington public relations firm $3.4 million – and possibly more – to enhance “the public’s perception and use of public transit.”
