One Swiss Vacation, Two Completely Different Ways to Escape Europe's Heat

The best response to a heatwave isn't always finding colder weather. Sometimes it's finding places designed to embrace summer. In Switzerland, that can mean beginning beside Lake Geneva before climbing into the Alps for mountain golf, glacier air and cool evenings—all within a few hours of each other.

Summer One: Lake Geneva

Heat changes the way people use a city. Museums empty. Sidewalks shorten. Everyone starts looking for water, and Switzerland's second-largest city understands this instinct. For decades, Geneva has been the city travelers hurried through on their way to somewhere else. In summer, however, it takes on a different identity.

When temperatures climbed into the mid-30s during my visit, sightseeing gave way to swimming, sailboats dotted the water and families naturally gravitated toward the shoreline. Paddleboards replace briefcases, and locals cooled off with lunchtime swims in Lake Geneva.

La Réserve Genève sits outside the busy downtown core, yet getting there could hardly be easier. Using the Swiss Travel Pass, we boarded a train at Geneva Airport and stepped off minutes later at Chambésy station. The hotel was little more than a two-minute walk away, making it possible to travel from baggage claim to a lakeside resort without renting a car.

Twenty minutes after collecting our luggage, we were already watching sailboats on Lake Geneva. That's not something many international arrivals can claim.

La Réserve’s private boat carries hotel and restaurant guests across the lake to central Geneva in about 15 minutes. It quickly became our favorite commute of the trip. Other cities send visitors underground on subways. Geneva sent us across the lake by boat. Before long, we weren't asking when we should leave for Geneva. We were asking, "Can we make the next boat?"

The City of Peace is surprisingly compact, easy to step off the boat and simply start walking. The boat left us only a short walk from some of Geneva's best-known attractions, but my sons had already decided what they wanted to see first.

Our first stop was to use our Choco Pass, which turns the city into a self-guided chocolate trail, encouraging visitors to wander between artisan chocolatiers while sampling Swiss specialties along the way. By the third chocolatier, my sons had abandoned any pretense of saving their treats for later. Every new stop prompted another debate over which chocolate shop deserved first place, a conversation that continued all the way back across the lake as we returned by boat for an afternoon beside the pool.

Sabine Bru, director of marketing at La Réserve Genève, said the property almost takes on a second identity once the weather warms. “We have two hotels. We have the hotel in winter and the hotel in summer, and they are completely different.”

The summer version spreads across several acres of lakeside parkland, with an outdoor pool, two tennis courts, children’s programming and direct access to the water for paddleboarding, wakeboarding and other activities. “People come to La Réserve because they like to be outside,” Bru said.

That space matters. Although the hotel has 102 rooms and two private villas, the gardens, waterfront and low-rise buildings keep it from feeling crowded. Our mornings disappeared as we explored Geneva before my sons inevitably gravitated back toward the pool and the lake.

Wet swimsuits spent more time hanging over balcony chairs than packed away in suitcases. No matter how much of Geneva we explored, the boys somehow found enough energy for "just one more swim" before dinner.

When the afternoon heat became too much, La Réserve offered plenty of reasons to stay put. Jacques Garcia's dark, safari-inspired interiors felt noticeably cooler than the sun-drenched lawns outside, while breakfast on the terrace and dinner at Tsé Fung, Switzerland's only Michelin-starred Chinese restaurant, made it easy to linger on the property.

I found myself gravitating toward the spa, where hushed treatment rooms, an indoor pool and medical wellness facilities felt worlds away from Geneva's busy streets. My jet-lag treatment included compression boots that looked more like astronaut training than a spa experience, but after a heavily delayed overnight flight, I wasn't about to argue with the results. By the time I stepped back outside, the city—and the heat—felt much farther away than a quick boat ride.

Summer Two: Crans-Montana

Reaching Switzerland's second summer requires little more than boarding another train. Geneva encouraged us to slow down beside the water. Crans-Montana encouraged us to keep moving.

Just over two hours after leaving the cozy enclave of La Réserve Genève by train, the lakeside city gave way to alpine meadows, winding mountain roads and crisp mountain air. Tourism researchers at ETH Zurich say the Alps are increasingly serving as "a refuge during heat waves," helping fuel another record summer for Swiss tourism.

The Federal Statistical Office reported 25.2 million overnight stays during the 2025 summer season, the highest on record. In Crans-Montana, where nearly half of all overnight stays now occur during the summer months, the shift from ski resort to year-round destination is easy to understand.

Golf, mountain biking, fishing, alpine lakes and wellness share the spotlight with the snow that first made the resort famous. Over three days, my family played the Omega European Masters course at Crans-sur-Sierre, cycled through the mountains, wakeboarded on a nearby lake and returned each evening to the same snow-capped backdrop.

At Crans Ambassador, the mountains steal the show. Floor-to-ceiling windows frame the Valais Alps from nearly every angle, making it almost impossible to look anywhere else.

The hotel's complimentary shuttle made it easy to move between the village and the surrounding attractions, whether teeing off at Crans-sur-Sierre Golf Club or browsing Crans-Montana's luxury boutiques. My boys window-shopped watches they had no intention of buying before deciding the sporting goods store was far more interesting.

Back at the hotel, it was just as tempting to stay put. There was never much urgency to leave the hotel in the first place; the best seat was often on the terrace.

Breakfast began with everyone stepping onto the balcony to see what the mountains looked like that morning. Dinner conversations had a habit of stopping mid-sentence whenever the light changed. One of us would quietly say, "Look," and every head on the terrace would turn toward the mountains. Even pots of bubbling fondue sat untouched for a few moments as the sky shifted from gold to deep orange.

One practical consideration for summer visitors: guest rooms do not have air conditioning. Europe was experiencing an exceptional heatwave during our visit, and the unusually warm overnight temperatures made sleeping with the windows open less effective than we had hoped.

The Journey Is Part of the Vacation

The Swiss Travel Pass quietly removes one of the biggest frustrations of family travel: logistics. Available for three, four, six, eight or 15 consecutive days, the pass covers unlimited travel on Switzerland’s trains, buses and boats, along with public transportation in more than 90 towns and cities. Most regular trains don't require seat reservations, so we could choose a departure and board without purchasing another ticket.

For families, one benefit can substantially change the cost. Children from age 6 through 15 travel free with the complimentary Swiss Family Card when accompanied by a parent holding a Swiss Travel Pass; children younger than 6 need no ticket. The pass also includes admission to more than 500 museums, selected mountain excursions and discounts on many other mountain railways.

We traveled with first-class passes, which gave us more luggage space and a quieter carriage during the two-hour journey from Geneva to Crans-Montana. Within an hour, the vineyards outside the window had replaced city streets.

Before long, the boys had stopped looking at their iPads altogether, and somewhere after Montreux, everyone quietly migrated to the same side of the carriage as the mountains began filling the windows. Nobody wanted to miss the next bend in the valley.

The train from Geneva Airport stopped a two-minute walk from La Réserve Genève, whose private boat carried us into the city. To reach Crans-Montana, we traveled by rail to Sierre and continued up the mountain by funicular, where Crans Ambassador’s shuttle handled local trips. We completed the entire itinerary without renting a car.

The Luxury of Time

Heat has a way of making vacations smaller. Plans shrink to whatever feels coolest. But Switzerland had the opposite effect. The lake draws people outside and the mountains keep them there.

Perhaps the country's greatest luxury is not a five-star hotel or a Michelin-starred meal. It is the ability to experience two completely different landscapes without spending a day getting from one to the other.

By the end of the trip, it became difficult to remember which experiences belonged to Geneva and which belonged to Crans-Montana. The days blended together in the best possible way: a boat crossing here, a mountain trail there, chocolate one afternoon, fondue the next. Rather than feeling like two separate vacations, they felt like two halves of the same Swiss summer.
