It’s easy for people who have never lived in Detroit to reduce us to headlines about bankruptcy, abandoned buildings, empty neighborhoods, or a city that was “left behind.” 

For a long time, that was the only version of Detroit that a lot of people outside of the city knew. But if you grew up here, you know that those stories were never the whole truth.
