Readers remember their fond memories and connections to The Montana Standard

We sincerely appreciate everyone who wrote in. Here are some of your memories:

I have many memories that were published in Montana Standard…about our annual powwows with pictures and the "thank you" from our powwow for donations with all the business names… it was a half page and so nice.

The Standard was a pretty big part of my life.

I grew up in Anaconda and would read the newspaper every morning while I ate breakfast. One of my favorites back then was a two-person column called Rat Chat, written by Bill Foley and Matt Vincent.

Eventually I became a student at Montana Tech and was hired in the sports department there. I worked around seven years there with great people.

Some of the Sports department was sports editor Bruce Sayler, writers Bill Foley and Pat Ryan. We put a lot of work in there and it was fun. I still miss it.

I now work in town as a Vocational Rehabilitation counselor for the state. I was featured a couple times in The Standard later as a musician.

High school sports in the 1980s! The day after any event, I couldn't wait to read the write-up on the game the following morning and see who got their picture in the paper. There was always a big spread for any Butte High/Butte Central rivalry with all the starters. It was the same thing when my children played sports. Athletics in Butte are a big deal, and the coverage was top-notch!

Michael Duffy

Back in early September of 1963, my mother received a call from a gentleman who had just arrived at the Butte train station and asked if she was the daughter of Mary Frazer. When she replied yes, he informed her that he was John Sullivan from Chicago and Mary’s brother.

My mom was convinced that my brother Joe was playing a trick on her, until Mr. Sullivan convinced her that he was indeed my grandmother’s brother, whom she had never met since, at age 12, she and her younger sister, Josie, had emigrated to America in 1900 before John had been born.

Despite his later emigration and settlement in Chicago, they had never gotten together but had corresponded with each other.

The reunion was featured in an article in the Standard, much to the delight of our far-flung family.

Mary and John were able to get together once again after that.

In 1972, my wife Jane and I travelled to Ireland and met my grandmother’s youngest brother, Michael, who still lived on the family farm. My grandmother was never able to meet Michael in person, but he grew up knowing all about her travels to Butte some 72 years before.

After reading the stories, my father did the crossword puzzle every day. Most days he finished it! I believe it was part of what kept him sharp until he passed at 89. He even got into the Sudoku when they started showing up. It was the first newspaper I read. Of course, just the comics when I was young. It got me reading the news, and later paying closer attention to what is happening in the world. Thanks for being there and existing. It gave me the belief of having a strong and fair media. An informed public is key to a strong democracy!

Cleo Postle

I’d love to see Butte’s early 1900s MT Daily newspaper cub reporter Burton Braley’s poems reprinted. There were at least 36 of them that either specifically written about Butte or with Butte in mind. Many of his topics are as timely today as they were then. I’d be glad to suggest a list of his poems, which I believe are all in public domain at this point.

I’d also like to see the poetry of the old-timer’s miners poetry posted on various walking trails around Butte and have been keeping an eye out for a possible grant to get that idea going. I’ve also written some of my Butte family history in poetry, which also incorporates the titles of many older books written about Butte. If any of this interests you. I’d be happy to share.

John 'Timmer' Reeves

My name is John "Timmer" Reeves. I had a great day on Jan. 31, 2019, because about me is “Giant Rams of Montana, Volume I” and get lots of text calls from my families and sheep friends in Montana. It was overwhelming because everyone read about me.

I had a good lunch day with David McCumber, former editor of The Montana Standard, and Dale A. Burk, Stoneydale Press, at Perkins restaurant in Butte on Jan. 22, 2019. I got my first book, “Giant Rams of Montana, Volume I” from Dale.

We had an interview with David. He took a nice picture of Dale and me. It was a special day for me. Thank you to David and Dale.

Right now, I'm working on my second book, "Giant Rams of Montana, Volume II.” It will be out before Xmas time. I'm excited about my second book because it will be more of a proofreading book. Probably over 300 to 350 pages. More ram mount photo gallery, with me and sheep hunters having their mount photo at their homes in Montana. Probably over 50 bighorn sheep hunt stories and photos in my second book.
