WVU Volleyball was swept by the University of Arizona 3-0 on Wednesday at the McKale Center in Tucson, Arizona.
WVU started off the match with a kill from redshirt junior opposite Trinity Sheridan, followed by a bad set from Arizona. Another kill from Sheridan, saw WVU open the set up 3-0.
Multiple runs for the Wildcats saw them put distance on the Mountaineers, going up by as much as nine points as Arizona took the set, 25-16
The Wildcats began the second set on a 3-0 run before a kill from junior middle blocker Maddy McGath gave WVU its first point of the set, making it 3-1.
Down 6-4, a kill from Sheridan saw the Mountaineers begin to gain momentum as WVU went on a 4-0 run, including an ace from Sheridan to see it make the score 8-6.
The Mountaineers kept up their momentum, going up 13-9 until a kill from the Wildcats jumpstarted a run, and cut into the lead, surpassing the Mountaineers at 15-14 before a media timeout.
Arizona came out of the timeout firing, going up 20-15 before a duo of kills from senior middle blocker Laila Ibrahim saw WVU cut back into the Wildcats' lead, as an ace from sophomore defensive specialist/libero Eily Painter tied the match at 21 for WVU.
Despite the surge, the Mountaineers did not have enough in the tank as Arizona took the set, 25-22.
The Wildcats started off the third set with a kill before WVU responded with a kill of its own from junior outside hitter Nina Horning to tie the set at one.
WVU was down 5-2 when Sheridan went off, recording a kill and a pair of aces to tie the match at five.
The Wildcats responded rapidly, going on a 10-1 run to make the score 15-6, before a WVU timeout.
Out of the timeout, the teams began to trade points, including a kill from redshirt senior Cassidy Tanton, in her first appearance since Oct. 24, returning from an injury.
The Mountaineers could not get a run going as the Wildcats took the third set, 25-12, sweeping the Mountaineers.
WVU Volleyball plays its final match of the regular season against No. 9 Arizona State University at 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 29, at the Desert Financial Arena in Tempe, Arizona.
